There are also some prohibit in the daily life of Cambodian people. As the saying goes, do as the locals do, understand these prohibitions, and you can better deal with Cambodians.

In a family, if the elder and the younger live in the same room, the bed of the younger generation must not be higher than the bed of the elder, and no one may hang their trousers over other people’s heads, otherwise, it is a big restrict and will be regarded as a sin. You must use your right hand to eat and deliver things. If you use your left hand to serve or deliver food to others, it will be considered rude.

When people meet each other and perform the “Sam Peah” as a way of greeting which the hands of the folded hands should not be swayed from side to side, nor should they be inclined to the left or right side of the body, and should not be raised above the head or stretched forward. If it is a handshake salute, you must shake hands with your right hand, because Cambodians regard the right hand as holy and think the left hand is unclean.

Whether in public or at home, don’t point your toes at others, and don’t touch other people’s heads with your hands. It is very disrespectful to do so.

When people enter the temple to burn incense and worship Buddha, it is strictly forbidden to wear shoes. Otherwise, it will be regarded as a serious offense. Photography is usually not allowed in temples. Taking photos of monks must obtain their consent in advance, somehow it will be regarded as disrespectful. In general, women are not allowed to enter the temple, meanwhile, it will be regarded as a desecration of the holy place.

In terms of marriage, intermarriage between cousins, cousins, and other blood relatives is prohibited.
